PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Conceptual design of the Puerto Valencia bridge. The project consists of a bridge located between the municipalities of Huila and Cauca, in the road “Páez – La Plata”, between the points k76+341.6 and k76+443.

The bridge was built with a straight isostatic metallic arch, formed with two arches, each with a vertical clearance of 56 ft (17 m). The cross section is made of square tubes of 31’’x 31’’ (80 cm x 80 cm) at the ends and 23’’x 31’’ (60 cm x 80 cm) at the center.

The king posts are circular tubes with a diameter of 10’’ (25 cm), located at 27 ft (8 m) each that transfer the loads from two stiffness beams to the arches. The stiffness beams consist of an “I” section with a height of 6ft (2 m) spanning 334 ft (102 m) between supports.

The transversal beams consist of an “I” section with a height of 3 ft (1 m), separated by 26 ft (8 m). They are connected to the stiffness beams with shear connections. The longitudinal beams consist of an “I” section with a height of 23’’ (60 cm) separated by 6 ft (2 m) each that supports a reinforced concrete slab with a height of 8’’(20 cm).

The bridge foundation is defined with a reinforced abutment over 3 ft (1 m) diameter piles, 40 ft (12 m) deep.

 

DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION APPROACH

The bridge cross section is comprised of two pedestrian sidewalks of 29’’ (75 cm) wide, two shoulders of 19’’ (50 cm) each and two lanes of 11 ft (3.65 m) wide. The total width of the bridge is 32 ft (10 m). The bridge has a constant slope of 2.0%.

The bridge contains seismic devices although it is located in a medium seismic risk zone. The lateral seismic devices are 15’’ (40 cm) high, 33’’ (85 cm) in length across the abutment width, anchored to the substructure using high strength adhesive systems.
