PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The engineering services provided include the constructability analysis of the Nipigon Cable-Stayed Bridge (Ontario) for the preparation of a tender proposal. The bridge consists of a four-lane cable-supported steel-concrete deck with 2 spans of 139+113 m. The superstructure consists of two connected flexible decks that accommodate two-lanes in each direction. The 70 m tall tower has three pylons and the stays are placed in a semi-harp arrangement. The study includes the assessment of various erection alternatives.

 

DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION APPROACH

Pedelta provided technical assistance for the preparation of the bid for Nipigon Bridge (project developed by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario). General qualitative review of the construction drawings was provided performing a constructability analysis of two different erection processes. Estimate cost of construction was evaluated following the conclusions thrown by an extensive structural analysis complying with the guidelines and statutes of the CAN/CSA–S6-06 and the Recommendations for stay cable design, testing and installation of the PTI (2012). Structural analysis of the erection process was performed with the advanced bridge software analysis RM Bridge (Bentley).

Scope of Services:

– General review of tender construction drawings

– Perform a structural analysis of the bridge to verify its general behavior

– Analyze the feasibility of a pure balance cantilever erection

– Analyze the feasibility of erecting the main span in balanced cantilever and the side span on temporary supports

– Review local effects due to crane loads on the slabs

– Assess the capacity of the main structural components (stress check)

– Define loads on temporary supports and preliminary design of foundations

– Qualitative report summarizing cost-effective innovations to reduce cost or to speed up construction
