PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The C-16 Expressway enhancement project is developed in the municipal district of Viladecavalls, Barcelona. The project’s main objective is to construct two new road collectors, which will be adjacent to the already existing C-16 Expressway and will give continuity to the road collector project issued by the Ministry of Development in the “Proyecto de Construcción. Autovía Orbital de Barcelona. Tramo: Olesa de Montserrat – Viladecavalls (48-B-4160)” project.

The geometric layout of the road corresponds to an ordinary road with a design speed of 40 mi/h (80 km/h). The project also includes the rearrangement of the existing intersection which connects the B-245 and B-120 road by building a new
roundabout that will enable to funnel the increasing traffic generated as a result of the construction of the new road collectors.

 

DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION APPROACH

This project includes the follow structures:

– Modification of the existing straddle bent.

The new straddle bent has a width of 75 ft (22.92 m) and consists of 10 beams 31’’ (80 cm) wide that resembles the existing beams. The new beams have a distance of 7 ft (2.38 m) and the length varies between 47 and 63 ft (14.52 and 19.23 m)

– Extension of the existing box culvert.

The new cross section starts from the existing cross section 26 ft wide by 19 ft (8 m wide by 5.82 m vertical clearance) and varies up to a maximum cross section of 42 ft (12.96 m) wide by 19 ft (5.82 m) of vertical clearance. The new thickness of the head beam and slab varies between 31 ‘’ (80 cm) to 4 ft (1.15 m).

– A viaduct that has been designed as a composite steel–concrete structure.

The overall length of the bridge is 177 ft (54 m) with a 36 ft (11 m) wide deck.

– Walls (Retaining walls).

Design was carried out meeting the Spanish Code requirement.
