PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Expansion design project for a masonry bridge over the Mogent River near the mile post 2km on the BV-5105 local byway between La Roca and Cardedeu (Barcelona, Spain). The bridge consists of 4 masonry arches. Each arch is 12m in length, with a deviation of 1.8 meters, and an after-construction upper deck 11 meters wide. The construction also included safety parapets.

Additionally, the connection to the byway on both bridge sides was accurately improved in order to make it comfortable and safe. The solution proposed in this project consists of 28 precast concrete plates with a width equal to the final platform.

 

DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION APPROACH

Design was carried out meeting the Spanish Code requirements. Reliability techniques were used to assess the structural safety of the bridge.

Some of the engineering tasks completed during this project include, but are not limited to: site inspection of the existing historical bridge, special inspection and preliminary reports of existing damage, identification and cause of cracks and fissures, core-sample extraction and material testing, bridge load rating analysis, rehabilitation procedure approach, methods of construction, structural report of the new widening structure and construction and post-construction engineering services.
